The Serpent of Eternity is an ancient symbol, dating back to at least 4000 BC - depicting eternity and the continuity of cyclic time. The serpent represents wisdom, regeneration and rebirth. To the Hindus the circular symbolism signified the breathing in & out of Brahma, the cosmic creator - when Brahma breathes out, worlds come into being; when he breathes in, all is reabsorbed into the divine essence. The symbol is also found in ancient Egypt, Greece, and West Africa, and among Buddhists and Jains, Gnostics and alchemists. The Ouroborous often represents self-reflexivity or cyclicality, especially in the sense of something constantly re-creating itself, the eternal return, and other things perceived as cycles that begin anew as soon as they end. It can also represent the idea of primordial unity related to something existing in or persisting from the beginning with such force or qualities it cannot be extinguished. The Ouroborous has been important in religious and mythological symbolism, but has also been frequently used in alchemical illustrations, where it symbolizes the circular nature of the alchemist's opus. The pentagram is a five-pointed star and is the most common Pagan symbol. The points represent the 4 elements of matter (earth, air, fire and water) plus the quintessential fifth element - spirit. The Ouroboros connects the five elements creating a pentacle and is symbolic of containment and protection and with the single point upwards, signifies the spirit ruling matter (i.e. mind ruling limbs) and is a symbol of rightness. A really powerful and symbolic pendant - it comes ready to wear on an adjustable cord (approx 14" to 30" long)
